Left Upon Read

Left Upon Read is a medieval action/adventure rpg with a modern twist. You play as a knight battling through a dungeon while also dealing with incoming text messages. The game was created for a group project with a multidisciplinary team, to simulate working in a professional studio environment. We recieved support from industry professionals at one of the UK's largest AAA studios.

The game was further developed through and is the winner of DARE Academy 2024, having been showcased at EGX London! It was nominated by Abertay University for the Best Student Game category of the TIGA UK Games Education Awards, and was also showed at the Glasgow Independant Games Festival!

Some of my contributions:

  • Responsible for enemies in the game -
    • AI and behaviour including combat mechanics
    • Working in blueprints to import animations, create layered bone blends, montages and ensuring they blend in and out correctly
    • Implement unique boss mechanics
  • Other gameplay mechanics
  • UI programming
  • Creating & modifying VFX and implementing backend systems controlling them
  • Took part in much more from game design to set dressing

DARE Academy 2024 Winners

We had the amazing opportunity to participate in DARE Academy, Abertays annual games design competition. The competition saw us spend the summer developing our game with support from academics and expert industry mentors, from studios including Epic Games, Rare, Ninja Kiwi, Rebellion and Abrakam, among others.

“The competition benefits from industry sponsorship and support, with companies also providing on-campus mentoring to the students to inform the design process and support skills development. Dare is designed to replicate a real-world gaming industry environment. It challenges students to work together across different disciplines of the courses offered by the School of Design and Informatics to produce creatively, and technically, strong game prototypes.”

The competition culminated in the trip to EGX in London, the UK's biggest gaming convention, where we got to show off our game to the public! Hundreds played our game and feedback was overwhelmingly positive!

We were chosen as the winners by a panel of industry professionals.
